The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his intentions for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As confusing as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a figure of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this change developed more slowly, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding of him since they are atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly absolutely not the story of an authoritative monarch arising; rather, an infant arrives to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to another nation to evade secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his teaching is about love for others, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a means to educate the assailant; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your coat you must offer them your pullover too.
The evident and straightforward truth that the Jesus from scripture calls for a form of radical love concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Finest of Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to help build the movement that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in large quantities during minor elections. We must have to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.
